What do I need to ride?

Ilkeston Cycle Club welcome people of all abilities however we do have some very basic requirements:

  • Helmets must be worn by all riders
  • We recommend cycling specific clothing for better comfort however this is not required
  • Lights must be fitted and activated if dark (and highly recommended during the day)
  • Bikes must be roadworthy with working brakes and good condition tyres
  • A brief understanding of group ride terminology (see below FAQ)

What does it mean when a rider makes a callout or hand signal?

When out on a group ride, you will hear several different callouts and see different hand signals:

Callouts:

  • “CAR UP” – There’s a car in-front that is approaching
  • “CAR BACK” – There’s a car behind that has approached the group
  • “CAR LEFT/RIGHT” – There’s a car to the left or right of a junction/hazard
  • “OUT” – There’s a hazard up ahead which requires the group to move out (such as a parked car, pedestrian etc)
  • “HOLE” – There’s a pothole or poor road surface up ahead (sadly, far too common!)
  • “GRAVEL” – There’s a patch of loose gravel on the road surface (road bikes don’t cope well with loose road surfaces)
  • “SLOWING/STOPPING” – This means the group is slowing down or stopping for a junction/hazard/give way and is usually accompanied by a hand signal (see below)
  • “CLEAR” – The junction/hazard is clear of traffic and safe for THE NEXT RIDER to proceed, please use caution and always check before moving out a junction.
  • “ALL ON?” – The ride leader should ask this after a junction/turn to ensure that everyone is still together in the group

Hand Signals:

We could show every type of hand signal however rather helpfully, Road.CC have already done this with a very comprehensive guide (with pictures!)
